GIS & AHP-Based Evaluation on Site Selection of Shanty Towns

Abstract

The site selection of shanty towns in Chinese resource-dependent cities is important for urban economic restructuring and sustainable development. All along, site selection of shanty towns is a complex process and needs many diverse criteria. But traditional urban planning theory is lack of scientific and systematic quantitative approach for it. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the suitability sites of shanty towns for reconstruction in Fengfeng mining district of Handan city in China. This paper adopts AHP to determine the factors which affect the site selection assessment from construction technological risk, Land exchange risk, Living convenience, Impact of industrial land and other aspects. With the help of GIS technology, it construct site evaluation index system and evaluation model to determine several suitable sites to reduce the risk of decision-making. The ranking of alternative sites are obtained in the study area through this approach.
