New Topology of Modular Multilevel Cascade Converter with Model Predictive Control
Abstract
This paper proposes a new modular multilevel cascade converter (MMCC) topology for active power filter application, which presents a reduction in the number of power switches and consequently reduction in costs and losses. A model predictive control (MPC) strategy, which considers a reduced number of states, is used to regulate the ac-side currents. Moreover, a simplified algorithm also based on sorting and MPC concepts, implements the task of maintaining the submodules’ capacitor voltage regulated. These control strategies are applied to a nine-level MMCC connected to a medium voltage distribution grid. Its performance is analyzed based on simulation results conducted in the environment of circuit simulations PSIM.
