Requirements and System Aspects of AR-Head-Up Displays
Abstract
This paper describes the requirements engineering for AR-HUDs and provides proposals to solve issues encountered in moving from conventional HUDs to AR-HUDs. These topics can be transferred to consumer electronics AR systems. The field of view for AR support on highways should be at least 20° × 20° and 60° × 40° in cities. This is about an order of magnitude larger than today and will be achievable by using holographic subassemblies for practical HUD volumes. AR content is not only projected on the road but also on bright buildings. For such use cases, the required luminance was calculated for a reasonable contrast ratio of 3 : 1 as 40,000 cd/m2. New HUD display technologies are needed to reach this value.
