A Novel Topology for Integrating Wind and Solar Farms to High Voltage DC Grid with FRT Protection

Abstract

Due to improvement in the potential market for offshore wind power plants (OWPP) and solar PV farms integration of these farms to DC grid appears to be a promising solution considering the efficiency, cost and reliability factors. In this work different architecture topologies available in literature for collecting wind energy using AC and DC collection system are discussed. A new topology for collecting energy from OWPP and solar PV farms using high voltage DC transmission is proposed here. To maintain constant DC link voltage and to meet the grid code requirements during grid side faults, fault ride through (FRT) technique is applied using DC chopper circuit. Simulation is performed in MATLAB/Simulink to evaluate the proposed system under grid side faults.
