Abstract

YBCO coated conductors with remarkable superconducting and electro-mechanical characteristics, have great potential for the high field magnets. In order to promote the application of domestic YBCO conductors in the high field magnet, a 5\xa0T class insert coil based on YBCO conductors has been developed at the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Tests of critical current versus magnetic field, field orientation, and strain have been done in support of the design. The YBCO insert coil, with the inner diameter of 28 mm, the outer diameter of 55 mm, consists of four double pancakes of the same size. The maximum central magnetic field can reach 19.8\xa0T at a transport current of 469\xa0A in the 14\xa0T low temperature superconducting (LTS) background field magnet at 4.2 K. The detailed design, fabrication, and experimental results of YBCO insert coil are reported in this paper.
