Methodology for Valuation of Shunt Capacitor Bank in Power Grid
Abstract
At present there are no strict guidelines in routine to judge the deployment of capacitor banks in the grid and practicing loss reduction in real time is an iterative task, without any guaranteed results. Therefore, research work carried in this paper tries to provide a base to the system engineer for valuation of shunt capacitor bank in power grid. The research paper models a fifteen-bus network, (agriculture rich) consisting of a 220-kV grid substation named as Hanumangarh city (Rajasthan, India) feeding power to six 132 kV stations in connection. Practices have been made to acquiesce better ways of shunt capacitor positioning by including surge impedance loading levels, ampacity level and grid planning instructions as a part of observation at conductor operations side. Real time data capturing and assessment of peak hours from April-2017 to June-2018 has been drilled altogether. Simulations are performed with recorded peak load to predict and calculate capacitor requirements at each GSS. Studies have been carried to mark the utilization level of equipment s engaged in the system. Lastly comparisons of the existing situation prevailing along with proposal exercised in the paper is discussed with suitable results obtained via power flow studies of test system covering sub-station losses, MVA as well as ampere loadings of transformers, lines and effect over swing bus loading levels too are briefed with possible future scopes.
