Reconsidering postpartum weight loss counselling interventions
Abstract
Postpartum weight retention contributes to long-term obesity. Brick et al. tested the feasibility of a future randomized trial of diet and exercise counseling at 8-16 weeks to reduce postpartum weight among women with overweight or obese before pregnancy (Brick et al. BJOG in press). Women randomized to the intervention (n=98) were offered a commercial weight loss program (with fees waived) of 12 weekly group counseling sessions. The intervention group had greater weight loss at 6 (1.6 kg) and 12 months postpartum (3.6 kg) than the control group. The authors conclude that a definitive trial is the next step. However, before additional postpartum weight interventions are undertaken, we must consider the broader context.
