Journal Global Health Program GH001 PATTERN AND EPIDEMIOLOGY OF MODERATE AND SEVERE TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY PATIENTS AT A SINGLE HOSPITAL IN A RESOURCE POOR SETTING, SODDO ETHIOPIA CAROLYN CHEW, TSEGAYE WOLDEGIORGIS AND ANDREW CHEW Soddo Christian Hospital, Wolaita Soddo, SNNPR, Ethiopia Worldwide, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant cause of death and disability following injury. It constitutes an important public health problem due to the large number of deaths and impairments leading to permanent disability and causing enormous losses to individuals, families and communities. We aim to evaluate the epidemiology, injury patterns and outcomes of patients with moderate and severe TBI at Soddo Christian Hospital (SCH), Wolaita Sodo. Ethiopia. This is prospective study of patients admitted to SCH over an 18-month period. Post-resuscitation Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was used for categorizing the severity of head injuries. Moderate TBI was classified as GCS 9 12 and severe TBI classified as GCS 3-8. A total of 221 patients were included in our study. The majority of patients were male (n=187, 84.6%), with 52.5% of patients aged 20-45 years old. Ninety-two patients (41.6%) had severe TBI and 129 patients (58.4%) had moderate TBI. In hospital mortality was 17.2% (n=38). The majority of deaths were amongst those aged 20-45 (n=23, 60.5%). Severe TBI, lung injury and sub-arachnoid haemorrhage were significantly associated with inhospital mortality (p<0.05). Traumatic brain injury is significant issue at our hospital, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. The majority of our patients were male and aged 20-45 years, which has significant economic impacts both at a personal level as well as on society as a whole. The government, health professionals and community should work collaboratively on prevention, pre-hospital care and early transfer to hospital to decrease morbidity and mortality from TBI.
