Abstract

Malignancy arising in chronic pilonidal disease is rare with only about 100 published reports [1]. The risk factors for malignant transformation include those untreated cases where there is an established 20-30 year evolution and disease progression, as well as recurrent cases [2]. The most common histological subtype is squamous cell carcinoma representing 80-90% of the cases. Even with radical excision, the oncological outcomes are poor with a 40-50% chance of locoregional recurrence and a 5-year overall survival rate of 55-61% [2, 3].
