Association between oral candidiasis and bacterial pneumonia: a retrospective study.
Abstract
Oral candidiasis is an opportunistic infection caused by intraoral commensals such as Candida species, particularly Candida albicans. Oral candidiasis is more prevalent in immunocompromised patients and/or patients undergoing treatment for the same, including patients requiring regular inhalations of steroids and/or long-term use of antimicrobial drugs and patients with dry mouth and/or with inadequate oral hygiene with/without dentures (Patil et al., 2015). Geriatric individuals debilitated by malnutrition or non-ambulatory patients often suffer from oral candidiasis (Paillaud et al., 2004; Ishikawa et al., 2008).
