Investigating subclinical hypothyroidism . . . and other stories
Abstract
Among 9000 people who took part in a series of Danish surveys of iodine intake and thyroid disease, nearly 400 were classified as having subclinical hypothyroidism (defined as raised levels of thyroid stimulating hormone with normal free thyroxine) (AmJMeddoi:10.1016/j.amjmed.2021.03.009). People in this group were no more likely to report symptoms characteristic of hypothyroidism than people classified as euthyroid. The implication is that symptoms inpeoplewith subclinical hypothyroidism need investigation rather than treatment with thyroxine replacement.
