Abstract
of moderate self-control. Nor again did Elias show no interest in the long-term civilising processes evident in other parts of the world, notably China, even if his own research was about Europe; more recent studies by others have begun to trace such processes outside Europe. Yet, these are tiny quibbles with a great book. Keith Thomas’s command of historical sources is formidable, daunting to a humble sociologist. No sociologist interested in the sociology of everyday life – whether in the mode of Elias or of Goffman and their successors – should neglect this book.
