Book Review: Southern Thunder: The Royal Navy and Scandinavian Trade in World War One
Abstract
influenced by Dutch explorations (pp. 280–2), before turning to extreme weather and witchcraft, and to technological innovations in print; any of these topics would make for fruitful and fascinating subsequent articles. To conclude, The Frigid Golden Age is a thoroughly researched, intellectually adventurous and methodologically meticulous study by a historian comfortable using a range of approaches and complementary source collections. The book’s core findings about the economic, military and cultural responses to the Little Ice Age in the Dutch Republic advances our understanding of how early modern states and their peoples responded and adapted to a radically changing, and changeable, climate. Cogently written, the implications of this confident example of environmental and social history should resonate today, as our societies grapple with the emergent challenge of extreme climate change once again.
