ASO Author Reflections: Immediate Breast Reconstruction in Patients with Inflammatory Breast Cancer—A Rising Trend
Abstract
Historically, breast reconstruction was considered contraindicated in patients with inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), given their high rates of locoregional recurrence, need for expeditious post-mastectomy radiation (PMRT), and poor overall prognosis. While IBC remains an aggressive disease, advancements in multimodal therapies have led to meaningful improvements in both locoregional control and survival. Accordingly, delayed breast reconstruction has gained acceptance for patients responding well to multimodal therapy. Still, immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) at time of mastectomy remains contraindicated per national guidelines given concerns over delays to PMRT and risk of recurrence.
