Abstract

Stamps on lamps: from their grammar to the production Besides being an important source of information on the Roman economy, stamped lamps give the opportunity to get some important insights into the practice of putting stamps on pottery. Two stamped lamps productions have been identified in Rome and Modena: their presence is well attested on a wide geographical area. In this paper, I examine these productions between the Augustan age and the first half of 2nd c. AD, in order to discuss by which ways potters used to engrave their names on lamps. As it will be clear, the analysis of stamp’s abbreviations and syntax will help in casting light on many aspects of the production process and on the organization of the workshops.
