Ethics of Translation for a Plural Europe

Abstract

After a brief analysis of the early themes of Jervolino, the essay analyzes the ethical value of translation, a value that, following Ricoeur, can constitute a common ethos that plural Europe needs. The translators assume the function of cultural mediators, in an authentic and original sense, so as to live in the other language, as invited guests, adapting as much as possible the resources of one and the other terminology. “Linguistic hospitality” represents this ethos of translation on the cultural and spiritual level. From here also a re-interpretation of the myth of Babel.
