Energy and exergy analysis of a CI engine fuelled with blend of liquid hydrocarbon waste plastics fuels and diesel

Abstract

The paper aims to highlight the importance of renewable energy in the contemporary world facing a range of environmental challenges. It brings out the conceptual, theoretical and methodological use of alternative fuel through an experimentation conducted in our research institute. The present work involves the energy and exergy analysis of a 5.9 kW diesel engine fuelled with diesel and WPE10 [10% of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) oil blended with 90% diesel by volume]. The LDPE oil was obtained at optimum condition of kaolin catalysed pyrolysis method. The analysis was conducted on per mole of fuel and on stoichiometric basis. The energy and exergy analysis was carried out by using 1st law and 2nd law of thermodynamics, respectively. The energetic and exergetic performance of WPE10 resembles with the diesel fuel which can be a substitute as an alternative fuel. The use of plastic waste for creating fuel is a step towards plastic waste management. The attempt of this paper is for a larger contribution to sustainable development.
