Improving Parent Communication: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Empathy Workshop
Abstract
Background: When babies are admitted to the NICU, it is paramount that members of the medical team provide empathetic care to the family while managing the patient. Verbal and written feedback from parents in our NICU identified a quality gap in this area among the nursing and medical staff. We initiated an Empathy Workshop to improve parent communication among providers. Specific Aims: 1. Identify baseline parent satisfaction with provider communication prior to the Empathy Workshop. 2. Over 2 years, improve provider comfort levels with parent communication by demonstrating statistically significant improvement in score for questions on the NICU Provider Communication Skills Self-Assessment.
