Abstract


Background Although parenting is a recognized social determinant of health, it is not routinely assessed in pediatric primary care, likely because there are no brief, validated screening tools. We developed the Parenting-Related Adverse Childhood Experiences (PRACEs) survey as a pediatric screening tool to detect unhealthy parenting. We defined PRACEs as spanking, threatening, yelling at, or humiliating a child. Unhealthy parenting strategies are known to be associated with child behavioral problems.
