Can Biogas help implement successful sanitation in Kenya’s Schools?

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the success of sanitation facilities which generate biogas in Kenyan schools. The Development Assistance Committee (DAC) criteria was used to assess the success, considering the relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, impact and sustainability of the sanitation project. The results of this analysis offered lessons learnt and recommendations to enable successful implementation of sanitation in schools. The research involved six schools, three in Kibera, Nairobi and three in rural Kenya. Each school was visited in March and October 2019. It was found that sanitation had improved at each school compared to the original sanitation and waste management behaviour had improved. Furthermore, evidence of cleaning procedures was in place. However, the reliance on donor funding and on the NGO to continually support the operation of the sanitation were identified. This highlighted risks to the sustainability of the biogas sanitation in Kenya’s schools.
