The Use of Elastic Bandage by Taping® Therapy Method in Pain in the Shoulder of Hemiplegic Patients: Randomized Clinical Assay
Abstract
AbstractPain in the shoulder of hemiplegic patients is always a factor that hinders the rehabilitation processes. There are many ways to combat\xa0\xa0 pain in the shoulder as cryotherapy, electrotherapy, analgesics, kinesitherapy and the botulinum toxin. The objective of this study was using the elastic bandage for the reduction of pain in shoulders of hemiplegic patients. Type of Study: Descriptive study of longitudinal, randomized type was used. Three rolls of elastic bandage Therapy Tex® brand were used in ten individuals with a diagnosis of Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA), with ages between 61 and 78 years\xa0 old (70.2 ± 70), all of the male sex, and was used by the visual analogue scale (VAS) to score the pain in the shoulder. The techniques used were on the skin that covers the brachial biceps and deltoid, always without tension and over a period of two consecutive months. During the period of two months the patients who were allocated after randomization in group I (total of 05) to use the shoulder movement by the technique of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) were mobilized\xa0 only by functional diagonal D1, without the use of any other device for pain control. Patients who were allocated in group II (total of 05) in the affected upper limb no other technique or movement were used, but the elastic bandage. EVA was applied at the beginning of the treatment and at the end of two months. The patients of group I had no change in the pain perception in the shoulder. Group II patients had a reduction from intense degree (100%) to mild (100%), in the perception of pain in the plegic shoulder. The use of elastic bandage continuously and for a long time (24 hours/day) may assist in combating the shoulder pain reduction in the hemiplegia.\xa0Keywords: Stroke. Athletic Tape. Fita Atletica. Hemiplegia.
