Abstract

Kudzu, a kind \xa0of\xa0 legume\xa0 \xa0cover \xa0crops \xa0(LCC),\xa0 \xa0plays \xa0important\xa0 \xa0roles \xa0in \xa0soil and \xa0water conservation. It is effective \xa0for \xa0inhibiting \xa0erotion,\xa0 compaction \xa0and leaching \xa0of nutrients, \xa0as well as to suppress weeds. \xa0Plants growing with legume \xa0ground covers usually show \xa0better nutrition,\xa0 \xa0growth and yield. Recently, \xa0this cover crops have been widely \xa0used to prevent \xa0the negative effects \xa0and to improve \xa0soil physical \xa0and nutritional \xa0characteristics. As a legume, \xa0bacterial \xa0inoculation\xa0 \xa0is to enhance \xa0the infection and nodulation activity. A research \xa0to observe \xa0the role of indigenous Rhizobium\xa0 on infection and nodulation \xa0activity of kudzu was carried \xa0out in September \xa0till December 2004. \xa0The research \xa0was done in Regosol \xa0volcanic \xa0soil in Tlatar \xa0Village \xa0of Sawangan in Magelang district of Central \xa0Java. A pot experiment\xa0 \xa0was arranged in 4x2 factorial\xa0\xa0 \xa0completely\xa0 \xa0randomized\xa0 \xa0design \xa0which \xa0was repeated\xa0 \xa0three times.\xa0 \xa0The \xa0seedling\xa0 \xa0innoculation\xa0 \xa0with \xa0root \xa0nodules \xa0endophytic\xa0 \xa0bacteria\xa0\xa0 was \xa0to increase \xa0nodulation \xa0and to enhance \xa0Kudzu\xa0 plant growth.\xa0 \xa0The seedlings \xa0were inoculated \xa0with \xa01, 2 and 3 ml/pot of grinded \xa0root nodules \xa0of wild plants \xa0containing \xa0endophytic Rhi zobium sp. \xa0The wild kudzu \xa0plants were taken \xa0from \xa0coastal \xa0sandy \xa0land \xa0of southern\xa0 \xa0Yogyakarta.\xa0 \xa0All treated seedlings were planted \xa0in a sterilized \xa0medium \xa0to be compared \xa0to the unsterilized \xa0one in order to examine \xa0the role of indigenous \xa0bacterias. Observation \xa0on bacterial infection activity, nodulation, \xa0and plant growth were taken \xa0at week \xa04, 6, 8, and \xa010. All the \xa0datas \xa0were \xa0variance\xa0 \xa0analyzed\xa0 \xa0and the \xa0treatments average \xa0were \xa0tested \xa0with 5% level \xa0of Duncan s multiple range test. The\xa0 results \xa0showed \xa0that \xa0application\xa0 \xa0of 2 ml/pot \xa0of innoculum significantly\xa0 \xa0increased \xa0the infection \xa0activity, nodulation \xa0and plant growth. Sterilized \xa0soil decreased \xa0the infection \xa0activity.\xa0 \xa0Since the innoculation \xa0of endophytic Rhizobium sp. \xa0in unsterilized \xa0soil significantly\xa0 \xa0increased the infection actifity,\xa0 nodulation \xa0and plant growth, \xa0so the indigenous Rhizobiu m sp. in rhizhosfer \xa0was needed to sinergisticaly \xa0worked \xa0well with inoculum \xa0to increase \xa0infection \xa0activities\xa0 \xa0and root nodulation.
