An observational study on the surgical antibiotic prophylaxis in the surgery ward of a tertiary care hospital

 
 

Abstract


Surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis refers to the use of antibiotics for the prevention of surgical site infections and does not include pre-emptive use of antibiotics to treat early infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has defined Surgical site infections (SSI) to standardize data collection for the National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance (NNIS) program. SSIs are classified into incisional SSIs, which can be superficial or deep, and organ/space SSIs, which affect the rest of the body other than the body wall layers. These classifications are defined as follows:
