Management and outcomes of carcinoma stomach in Central India: a prospective cross-sectional study

 
 
 

Abstract


Adenocarcinoma of the stomach was the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide through most of the 20th century. Cancer rates in India are rising with increasing migration of rural population to the cities, increase in life expectancy and changes in lifestyles. Diet in India encompasses diversity unknown to most other countries where very little is known about the role of the Indian diet in causation or its role in prevention of cancer. Although the incidence of gastric cancer has decreased, the number of newly diagnosed cases of proximal gastric and esophago-gastric junction adenocarcinomas has increased markedly. These tumors are thought to be more aggressive than distal tumors and complex to treat. The only proven, potentially curative treatment for gastric cancer is surgical resection of all gross and microscopic disease.
