Abstract

Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) is rupture of membrane before the onset of uterine contractions in pregnancies less than 37 weeks and the incidence varies from 3.0-10.0% of all deliveries. PPROM is responsible for about one third of all preterm births. In India the incidence of preterm labor is 23.3% and almost 26% is because of PPROM. PPROM predisposes the mother to serious infections such as chorioamnionitis, endometritis, and bacteremia, fetus are at a very high risk of preterm delivery. PPROM is also associated with increased risk of respiratory distress syndrome, congenital pneumonia, early onset sepsis, necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and other morbidities such as chronic lung disease (CLD) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
