The influence of the foreign language certificate regulation on motivation among undergraduates
Abstract
This paper aims to analyse the extent to which the latest changes to t \nhe fore \nign language certificate \nregulation have influenced \nundergraduates’ \nmotivation \nto learn English \n, especially among final year students at the Centro de Magisterio La Inmaculada. The \nmain reason why we focused on \nthe \nstudents in question is the fact that the \ny are divided into different groups depending on the \nir \nmajor subject (Science, English, Physical Education and Attention to Diversity), which \nhas enabled us \nto observe four different \nprofiles. Furthermore, we wanted to explore the possible differences betw \neen them regarding two main issues: their motivation \nto \nstudy English as a Foreign Language and their opinions about the change in foreign language regulation at the University of Granada \n. \nIn order to examine these questions, we created a questionnaire tha \nt gathered both quantitative and qualitative data. The results \nconfirmed our hypothesis: the latest regulation has \naffected \nstudents’ motivation towards EFL learning. Now, more than ever, \nundergraduates opt for learning English to obtain a B1 certificate that will allow them to graduate from University. Moreover \n, there \nhave been some significant differences between the groups, especially \nin the case of \nfuture English teachers and the rest of \nspecialities.
