EVALUATION OF THE SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN THE EGYPTIAN COASTAL CITIES (SHARM EL-SHEIKH CITY)

Abstract

Egypt sustainable development Strategy aims to build a state with a diversified and competitive economythat depends on knowledge, justice and makes progress in the Egyptian urban environmental quality. Inthis context, previous studies have shown that most of the Egyptian coastal cities have problems such asthe dependence of these cities on tourism as a major economic activity, which led to a decline in thegrowth rate of most of these cities as a result of non-diversification of its economic activities. Therefore,this paper aims to review and evaluate the current situation of Sharm El-sheikh urban development as anexample of one of the most important Egyptian coastal cities, and try to evaluate it using a number ofsustainable city indicators. The research concluded that Sharm El-sheikh city currently has manyadvantages of sustainable cities; however, its economic activities should be diversified, as well as not tooverlook the morality and social criteria of Egyptian and Arabic community by the time of promotingtourism in the city and developing the operating systems of various touristic facilities. So that the city willbe economically sustainable without having crises from time to time, and also to obtain the city anadvanced level in the ranking of sustainable cities. The research recommends the necessity to completeand unify some services and the urban spaces furniture in all city neighborhoods to meet the Egyptian andinternational scientific standards. ا ستراتیجیة التنمیة المستدامة لمصر تھدف الى بناء دولة ذات إقتصاد تنافسى و متنوع یعتمد على المعرفة والعدالة، و یرتقىبجودة البیئة العمرانیة المصریة. وفی ھذا الإطار أوضحت دراسات سابقة أن معظم المدن الساحلیة المصریة لدیھا مشکلاتمنھا اعتماد تلک المدن على السیاحة کنشاط اقتصادى رئیسى، مما أدى الى انخفاضمعدل نمو معظم تلک المدن نتیج ة عدم تنوعالأنشطة الا قتصادیة بھا، لذلک تھدف ھذه الورقة البحثیة الى استعراضو تقییم الوضع الحالى للتنمیة العمرانیة لمدینة شرمالشیخ کمثال لأحد أھم المدن الساحلیة المصریة، ومحاولة تقییمھ با ستخدام عدد من مؤشرات المدن المستدامة، وخلصالبحثالى أن مدینة شرم الشیخ تملک حالیا کثیر من ممیزات المدن المستدامة إلا أنھ یجب تنویع الأنشطة الاقتصادیة بھا، بالإضافة الىعدم إغفال المعاییر الأخلاقیة والا جتماعیة للمجتمع المصرى والعربى عند الترویج السیاحى للمدینة، وعند وضع نظم تشغیلالمرافق السیاحیة المختلفة، وذلک لکى تکون المدینة مستدامة ا قتصادیا دون أزمات بین الحین والأخر، وأیضا لکى تحقق المدینةمستوى متقدم فى تصنیف ا لمدن المستدامة. ویوصی البحث بضرورة استکمال و توحید مستوى بعضالخدمات و فرشالفراغات العمرانیة بکل أحیاء المدینة بحیث تتوافق مع المعاییر العلمیة المصریة و الدولیة.
