Phytochemical Constituents, Antimicrobial and Antitumor Effects of Pomegranate Fruit (Punica granatum L).
Abstract
Pomegranate\xa0 fruit\xa0 has\xa0 exposed\xa0 various\xa0 health\xa0 benefits\xa0 in\xa0 many\xa0 recent\xa0 studies\xa0 due\xa0 to\xa0 its\xa0 rich\xa0 content\xa0 of\xa0 bioactive\xa0 chemical compounds. This\xa0 study\xa0 was\xa0 carried\xa0 out\xa0 to\xa0 investigate\xa0 the\xa0 content\xa0 of these\xa0 bioactive\xa0 compounds\xa0 in\xa0 pomegranate\xa0 fruit\xa0 along with\xa0 its\xa0 antimicrobial\xa0 and\xa0 antitumor\xa0 effects.\xa0 Pomegranate\xa0 peel\xa0 powder and\xa0 juice\xa0 were\xa0 analyzed\xa0 for\xa0 its\xa0 phytochemical\xa0 constituent\xa0 content ( total phenols, total flavonoids).\xa0 Phenols and flavonoids contents were estimated qualitative and quantitative using HPLC technique.\xa0 Furthermore, antitumor activity was tested in vitro on human cell lines.\xa0 Likewise, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity were investigated. The results\xa0 showed\xa0 that\xa0 the both\xa0 ethanolic\xa0 and\xa0 aqueous\xa0 extracts\xa0 of\xa0 juice\xa0 and\xa0 peels\xa0 powder\xa0 have antitumor\xa0 and\xa0 antimicrobial\xa0 activity.Phytochemicals\xa0 have\xa0 shown\xa0 superior\xa0 content\xa0 in\xa0 peels\xa0 than\xa0 juice including\xa0 total\xa0 polyphenols\xa0 61.63\xa0 and 15.93 mg/g,\xa0 and\xa0 total flavonoids\xa0 49.3\xa0 and\xa0 25.85 mg/g,\xa0 in\xa0 peels\xa0 and\xa0 juice,\xa0 respectively. Peels extract has exhibited significant antimicrobial activity higher than aqueous extract of juice at 1000 ppm concentration.\xa0 Thus, peels and juice extracts demonstrated higher antimicrobial activity against E.coli, fungi and yeast.\xa0 In the test of pomegranate peels and juice extracts for the protective effect against human cell lines, the pomegranate extracts and AgNPs exhibited significant protective effect.In conclusion, our study suggested that pomegranate fruits or its extracts can use as antitumor and antimicrobial agents. Pomegranate fruits are sources of bioactive compounds such as phenolic and flavonoids with potentially high antioxidant activities.
