A ESCALA DUAL: DA AMBIGUIDADE MODAL À DUALIDADE EXPRESSIVA EM VIVALDI, BIZET E CHOSTAKÓVITCH

 

Abstract


In this work will be analysed recurrences of the Dual Scale in the music of Vivaldi and Bizet, and its expressive connection with Shostakovich’s music. The Dual Scale consists in a pitch set constructed upon a diatonic logic. Its employment results in a remarkable modal ambiguity. Its application can be verified in tonal works from the baroque through the romantic, in contexts in which its expressiveness features semiotic elements like duality, ambiguity or paradox. From the 20 century the dual scale is recognized as singularity of Dmitri Shostakovich’s post-tonal music.
