Reiterando o sentido da epidemiologia social na compreensão das desigualdades e avanço da equidade em tempos da COVID-19
Abstract
In this text, we aimed to reflect about the social epidemiology considering the unequal social context, which was intensified by Covid-19 pandemic. For responding this objective, we developed a reflexive text, in which we recover part of the history of social epidemiology throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and we refer some theorists of social epidemiology, and the main theoretical currents, which supported the proposal. Parallel reflection has been established with traditional or classic epidemiology, the latter centered on the individual and the disease and its risk factors. We also recover the direct and indirect impacts associated with COVID-19, notably for poorer countries and groups. As a result of this discussion, we consider it necessary to reaffirm social epidemiology as a science in order to develop solutions to the effects of inequality. COVID-19 s solution cuts across the issue of vaccine availability, insists on devising solutions and mechanisms so that its distribution is fair and equitable to all peoples. Although there is no ready-made solution, social epidemiology might be used as an evidence base to reflect upon strategy. As long as not everybody benefits from advances in medical technology, society continues at risk.
