Fluorinated Ionic Liquid-Based Electrolytes with High Nitrogen Gas Solubility for Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis
Abstract
Ammonia has sparked great interest as a carbon-free energy carrier for the transportation of renewable energy worldwide. The major objective of this dissertation is to design and synthesise fluorinated ionic liquid-based electrolytes that are capable of dissolving large amounts of nitrogen gas, for the electrochemical conversion of nitrogen into ammonia. Through the construction of a highly-precise pressure apparatus to measure the solubility of nitrogen gas, new underlying principles to raise the amount of dissolved nitrogen were established by tailoring the individual components, and the physical properties of the fluorinated electrolyte.
