Abstract


Air pollution is a major problem on a global scale, having disastrous effects on the environment and on humans. Gaseous pollutants emitted by ship engines are the main cause of pollution. Thus, there was the need to enact regulations on limiting emission levels of harmful pollutants from ship funnels. In order to comply with these regulations, shipping industry turned to electrical propulsion systems with electricity, hybrid propulsion systems, alternative fuels and the installation of special filters to remove much of the gases and particles responsible for air pollution. This dissertation presents the principle of operation of internal combustion engines, types and specifications of marine engine fuels. Then the types of pollutants are analyzed, their effects on humans and the environment as well as the institutional framework that has been applied to reduce them. \nThe next chapter examines ways to reduce sulfur oxide emissions using electricity and electric motors as well as propulsion with a combination of electric motors and traditional diesel engines. Afterwards, there is a description of the types, principle of operation, advantages and disadvantages of special filters, called scrubbers. The next chapter examines alternative ways to reduce sulfur oxide emissions. It presents the advantages and disadvantages of using alternative fuels, using renewable energy sources for the propulsion of ships. In the end, the conclusions from all the ways of reducing sulfur oxides emissions, mentioned in the previous chapters are presented.
