Observation of Phase Transitions in the W–C System during Electrothermal Explosion under Pressure

Abstract

Recently, we suggested a facile method for synthesis of WC–W2C composites by electrothermal explosion (ETE) under pressure [1, 2]. Due to exceedingly high rates of temperature rise (1300 K/s), our experimental setup turned convenient for observation and identification of phase transitions in the W–C system, which earlier could be done only after the carbidization process [3, 4]. In this work, we checked whether or not a temperature profile of ETE can be applied to the analysis of phase transformations taking place in the W–C system.
