Abstract

Background: PCOS is one of the most common endocrine metabolic disorder found among women of reproductive age group. It is characterized\nby the presence of ovulatory dysfunction, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology. PCOS has seen to have overlapping features of\nmetabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, which seems to be a linking factor between the two. The present study was undertaken to \uf001nd the\nprevalence of metabolic syndrome and Insulin resistance in women diagnosed with PCOS in north-Indian population.\nObjective:To \uf001nd the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance among women diagnosed with PCOS in north-Indian population.\nMaterials and Methods: 100 women attending gynecology-OPD diagnosed with PCOS were enrolled and assessed for the presence of clinical\nand/or biochemical features of metabolic syndrome.\nResults: Metabolic syndrome was present in 31% of women with PCOS. 87% of women with metabolic syndrome were obese, 93.5% had HDL\nlevel <50mg/dl; 90.3% had fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dl. 69% of PCOS women had insulin resistance.\nConclusion: Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance is highly prevalent among women with PCOS. Lipid and blood glucose parameters should\nbe simultaneously assessed to screen women with PCOS in the clinical set up to prevent or delay the long term effects of metabolic syndrome.
