ASSESSMENT OF TRANSFUSION KNOWLEDGE AMONG MEDICAL UNDERGRADUATES OF SOUTH INDIA

Abstract

Background: Assessing the knowledge in transfusion medicine among medical undergraduates which will play a major impact while using the\nblood and it is also concerned with safety of the patient. Transfusion medicine is a branch of medicine which deals with all the aspects of blood and\nblood components from collection to transfusion. Blood transfusion is also used in treating various dreadful diseases, so knowledge about this is\nutmost important. Main aim of this study is to analyse and evaluate the basic knowledge about transfusion medicine among undergraduates which\nprovide information about the methods which have to be improved.\nMaterials and methods: we conducted a cross sectional study to evaluate the knowledge of transfusion medicine among 186 medical\nundergraduates from various medical colleges in south India, using multiple choice questions.\nResults: There is a not much disparity of knowledge between \uf001rst year and \uf001nal year medical undergraduates regarding transfusion medicine.\nMost of these upcoming doctors expressed dif\uf001culties in answering basic questions. Major breaks in the knowledge were noted among both \uf001rst\nyear and \uf001nal year medical undergraduates.\nConclusion:After observing the results we believe that more action plans are needed to increase the ef\uf001ciency and some additional topics are to be\nadded to our present medical educational curriculum which might limit the consequences.
