Relationship of 5S, TPM and SMS to Enhance Safety Performance of Manufacturing Industry

Abstract

Abstract In the present scenario, worker safety of a manufacturing industry is an important issue. There are also many manufacturing organizations that do not care for the health and safety of the employees. Only focus on their profits they do not follow the rules of occupational health and Safety (OHS) management systems and cannot control high safety standard and industrial hazards. The success of an OSH management system cannot be ascertained unless the management system is proactively operated. Mishaps possibility and hazards, probably occurred in plant equipment maintenance, factory housekeeping and workshop worker, are increasing along with the technical advancement. This will result into accident and injuries. Human errors are most common factor in incident occurrence which is depends on the three classes of operation: production, housekeeping or industrial cleaning and equipment maintenance or repair. The main purpose of this research paper is to identify safety cultures and define the factors which affect the industrial safety. In this paper the concept of 5S applied with Total productive maintenance (TPM) and Total safety management (TSM) or Safety management system (SMS) to improve safety performance, so that the conceptual model based on the hypotheses has been presented. This model represents relationship among the 5S, SMS/TSM, TPM and safety performance. TPM is one of very useful plan which is used for enhance equipment efficiency, product quality, job satisfaction and improve safety performance of organization. TPM is a maintenance system promotes to positive safety culture with the help of involvement of top to bottom level management including every worker.
