Abstract

Objective \nTo analyze the reasons and nursing countermeasures for unplanned returned patients to the hospital after ophthalmic ambulatory surgery. \n \n \nMethods \nThe patients on unplanned return to the hospital after ophthalmic ambulatory surgery from January to June of 2018 in Ophthalmic Day Surgery Center, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University were selected as subjects in this study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted and the patients general information and reasons of the return were recorded. \n \n \nResults \nFrom January to June 2018, 13 447 surgeries had been performed in Ophthalmology Day Surgery Center. Totally 110 patients made unplanned return to the hospital 24 hours after discharge, yielding an returning rate of 0.82%. Among the reasons of returning, 38 cases were due to high intraocular pressure, 1 corneal epithelium exofoliation, 61 surgical incision pain, and 10 non-ophthalmic surgical reasons. \n \n \nConclusions \nHigh intraocular pressure and pain of surgical incision are the main reasons for unplanned return to hospital within 24 hours after operation. Strengthening health education and psychological nursing for patients with discomfort after operation such as pain, and teaching the patients the main symptoms requiring returning to hospital for diagnosis and treatment as well as to discover complications as early as possible, can effectively ensure the postoperative safety of ophthalmic ambulatory surgical patients. \n \n \nKey words: \nNursing;\xa0Day Surgery;\xa0Cause analysis;\xa0Medical quality
