Droit à l’éducation de l’enfant : une mise en perspective à travers la question de l’abandon scolaire au Sénégal
Abstract
The aim of this article is to contribute to the debate on the right to education of the child. Specifically, our purpose is to study the reasons for dropping out of school by young children attending primary school using data from the latest national poverty monitoring survey. To do this, we first used bivariate statistics and the methods of principal component analysis and hierarchical ascending classification to perform a descriptive-type analysis of dropout children, and then identified the explanatory factors of the school dropout using a LOGIT model. The approach adopted made it possible to highlight a certain number of results. The study found that dropout is a multidimensional phenomenon and that most children leave school before reaching the last grade of primary school. The individual characteristics (in particular the age and sex of the child) and family (in particular the level of education, the socio-professional category and the religion of the head of household), as well as the poor school results (in this case exam failure) are the main determinants of early school leaving in Senegal.
