Abstract

Objective \nTo systematically assess the relationship between metabolic syndrome and osteoarthritis. \n \n \nMethods \nDatabases including PubMed, Excerpta Medica Database(EMbase), China Biology Medicine disc (CBM), China Science and Technology Journal Database(VIP), the Cochrane Library(Issue 5, 2018), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and WanFang Data were searched for the published studies including the investigation of the correlation between metabolic syndrome and osteoarthritis from inception to May 2018. The observational trials about correlation between metabolic syndrome and osteoarthritis were included, and repeat published literatures were excluded. Two authors specifically assessed literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, acquired data and evaluated the risk of bias of involved studies. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software. \n \n \nResults \nA total of nine studies including 25 096 patients were involved. The results of meta-analysis showed that pooled crude risk of occurrence of osteoarthritis in metabolic syndrome population was 2.23 times of the non-metabolic-syndrome population[OR=2.23, 95%CI(1.48, 3.36), P=0.0001], and pooled adjusted risk of occurrence of osteoarthritis in metabolic syndrome population was still greater than non-metabolic-syndrome population[OR=1.05, 95%CI(1.03, 1.07), P<0.01]. \n \n \nConclusion \nMetabolic syndrome is associated with osteoarthritis, which increases risk of osteoarthritis. \n \n \nKey words: \nMetabolic syndrome;\xa0Osteoarthritis;\xa0Meta-analysis
