Abstract

EnglishAlexandre Dumas fils’famous novel La Dame aux camelias (1848) and its adaption for the stage (1852) unexpectedly played an important role in the modernization of Chinese culture. As the first foreign novel translated and published in China at the end of the 19th century, it was widely spread, read and appreciated by Chinese readers at that time, and the narrative concept of Chinese novelists even changed because of it. At the same time, the adaptations of the novel into drama, in China, have rewritten Margaret’s story and incorporated the work into the May 4th new cultural movement dedicated to the finding of new ideas. La Dame aux camelias, its first emergence as novel, and its subsequent adaptation into drama, has contributed into the evolution of Chinese drama and Chinese operas from the late Qing dynasty to the early Republic of China francaisLe celebre roman d’Alexandre Dumas fils La Dame aux camelias (1848) et son adaptation pour la scene (1852), ont joue un role capital, bien qu’inattendu, dans la modernisation de la culture chinoise. Tout premier roman etranger traduit en chinois et publie en Chine a la fin du XIXe siecle, il fut largement diffuse, lu et apprecie par le public chinois de l’epoque, et grâce a lui, les romanciers chinois modifierent leur conception de la narration. Parallelement, la Chine adapta ce roman a la scene pour reecrire l’histoire de Marguerite, au point que l’oeuvre en est venue a se fondre dans l’elan du Mouvement pour une nouvelle culture tout entier dedie a la quete d’idees neuves. La Dame aux camelias, qu’elle soit le fruit d’un travail sur le roman lui-meme ou d’une adaptation pour le theâtre, a ainsi contribue a transformer et a faire evoluer le theâtre et l’opera chinois entre la fin de la dynastie Qing et le debut de la Republique de Chine
