Prospects of tensor CSRMT soundings for the delineation of hydrogenic taliks in permafrost areas

Abstract

Summary Prospects of application of the controlled source radiomagnetotelluric (CSRMT) method with a horizontal electric dipole for contouring of hydrogenic taliks in the cryolithozone are considered. Mathematical modeling has been carried out for a model of a talik located under the pond in the permafrost area for measurement conditions in the far-field zone of the source. The accuracy of the modeling was estimated using the algorithm for the transition zone of the source. 1D and 2D inversions for TE and TM modes, and bimodal 2D inversion of synthetic curves have been performed. Based on the results of modeling the possibility of mapping the under-channel and sub-lake taliks using the CSRMT method has been demonstrated. In this case, it is advisable to use the tensor modification of the method with two perpendicular transmitting dipoles. The most reliable result for talik contouring is provided by the bimodal inversion of tensor data.
