Nufrieva nom. nov., a Replacement Name for Paracanthus Anufriev, 1978, a Subgenus within the Leafhopper Genus Evacanthus Le Peletier and Serville, 1825 (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Evacanthinae)
Abstract
During taxonomic research on the leafhopper subfamily Evacanthinae, my colleague S. McKamey and I discovered that Paracanthus Anufriev (1978), a subgenus of Evacanthus Le Peletier and Serville, 1825 (Cicadellidae: Evacanthinae: Evacanthini), is a preoccupied name (Arts. 23.3.5, 52, 60.1, 60.3; ICZN, 1999). Merriam (1973) first used the name Paracanthus for new fossil corals from Canada (family Streptelasmatidae). The name also frequently appears in public forums as a common misspelling of Paracanthurus Bleeker, 1863, a genus of surgeon fishes or ‘tangs’ (Acanthuridae). The new name Nufrieva is here proposed to replace the subgenus name Paracanthus Anufriev in the tribe Evacanthini. The name “Nufrieva” is chosen to honor Dr. Georgy Aleksandrovich Anufriev, an eminent researcher on the Auchenorrhyncha who recently passed away. As numerous other genera have been named in his behalf, I choose a novel combination of letters (Art. 30.1.4.1; ICZN, 1999) that will be an easily recognizable permutation of his surname. A revised classification for this subgenus follows:
