Abstract

Objective: The study was conducted with the aim of determining the professional self-esteem levels of undergraduate nursing students and influential factors. Method: The sample of this descriptive study consisted of 169 students who were enrolled in the Undergraduate Nursing Degree of the Faculty of Health Sciences at a foundation university located in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the Fall semester of the academic year of 2016-2017. The data in the study were collected by a “Descriptive Characteristics Questionnaire Form” and the “Aricak Personal Self-esteem Inventory”. The data were evaluated by being coded in the SPSS 20 package program. The data obtained were evaluated with the Mann-Whitney U Test and the Kruskal-Wallis H Test. Results: In the study that was conducted, the mean score of the students in the Aricak Personal Self-esteem Inventory was found as 112.09±22.76 (min=56.00 max=150.00). Professional self-esteem levels were found higher among the male students, those with lower numbers of siblings, those who preferred the profession in the first ranks, those who preferred the profession because they liked it and those who were satisfied with their academic life. Conclusion: In the light of these results, it is believed that it would be beneficial for nursing students to make their choices consciously and be supported to choose a suitable profession to their interests and talents. It is also recommended to conduct qualitative studies where self-esteem is examined based on gender.
