Abstract

In recent years, eating habits have changed considerably. For this reason, non-communicable diseases have increased both in central countries and in countries with emerging economies. The objective of the study was to determine the daily sodium intake during breakfast and to verify its relationship with the nutritional status in schoolchildren residing in the City of Veracruz. 30 participants were selected, of which 12 were female and 18 male, aged between 7 and 9 years old. The schoolchildren were measured anthropometrically and the daily sodium intake was recorded for eight days. The statistical treatment was performing t Student tests for independent groups in the variables and Pearson s r correlation with a two-tailed significance (p≤0.05). Within the results, it was found that the average intake of eight days with a reference value of 1500 mg according to the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as the Pearson correlation test between the average daily sodium consumption of the group of schoolchildren studied (M = 472.5 ± 149.8 mg) was significantly lower than that established by the WHO (1500 mg) (p≤0.0001). In conclusion, the average sodium consumption during breakfast for eight days of a homogeneous group of schoolchildren was lower than that recommended by the WHO; future studies will have to be carried out to analyze sodium consumption during the rest of feeding times.
