O frade santo e o clérigo vaidoso: coopetições e propagandas eclesiásticas nas crônicas franciscanas (Itália, c. 1281-1399)

Abstract

This article deals with Franciscan history in the 13th and 14th centuries. Based on three chronicles written by Franciscans, he analyzes the relations of partnership and rivalry that the friars had with secular clergy. The text raises two problems: disputes over the worship of the saints and competitions for incomes from priestly services. Methodologically, he interprets them in the light of the concept of coopetition, comparing similar passages from each of the chronicles. The hypothesis he outlines is that, in addition to the mendicant ideology, the friars needed to be involved in ecclesiastical businesses, driven by popular demands and by initiatives for the moral reform of the clergy. With it, the work aims to clarify the mechanisms through which the Franciscans conquered their space in the fierce city environment of low-medieval Europe - sometimes cooperating, now competing with other segments of the Church - as well as the rhetorical instruments they used in their ideological defense .
