Femtosecond direct-writing of waveguide in non-oxide glasses

Arnaud Zoubir; Martin Richardson; Cedric Lopez; L. Petit; Kathleen Richardson; Clara Rivero; Alfons Schulte

We present the fabrication of waveguides in optical materials using a femtosecond laser. The direct laser writing technique has the unique advantage of allowing volume structures to be fabricated. We investigate several writing schemes in non-oxide glasses and characterize the photo-induced modifications of the optical properties. These changes are linked to structural changes in the glass matrix, as revealed by Raman spectroscopy.

Direct fabrication of waveguiding structures with a femtosecond laser

Arnaud Zoubir; Martin Richardson; Clara Rivero; Cedric Lopez; Kathleen Richardson

We report the characterization of waveguiding devices fabricated in optical materials using a femtosecond pulse train from a Ti:Sapphire laser at a 25 MHz repetition rate. Both interferometry and micro-thermal analysis have been used as diagnostics to evaluate optical and structural changes within the glass matrix. A free-electron model is developed to explain the refractive index change. We report the characterization of waveguiding devices fabricated in optical materials using a femtosecond pulse train from a Ti:Sapphire laser at a 25 MHz repetition rate. Sub-microJoule kHz/MHz femtosecond laser oscillators for use in surface micromachining

Martin Richardon; Lawrence Shah; Arnaud Zoubir; M. Al-Ani

Until recently, most femtosecond laser systems have required chirped pulse amplification (CPA) schemes to generate sufficient energy for micromachining. Here we present experimental results in precise surface structuring of materials using modified femtosecond laser oscillators which are generally less expensive and less complicated than traditional CPA systems.
