Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory intestinal disease associated with increased of pro-inflammatory cytokines, iron deficiency and anaemia. This case report demonstrates a strategy for intravenous iron supplementation in a patient with Crohn´s disease and severe anaemia. This study found an increased in iron and haemoglobin concentrations, malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase levels and a reduction in glutathione peroxidase (GPx), vitamin A and E. In conclusion the use of intravenous iron probably leads to increase ROS production; this effect may be reduced by using polivitaminics, and enhanced the free radical scavenger.

Background/Aim: We studied the molecular pathogenesis of obesity, involving complex interactions between environmental and genetic factors, with a focus on the leptin gene. It was our aim to characterize the LEP -2548G>A leptin polymorphism and lipid profile in obese and normal-weight individuals. Methods: A total of 212 individuals were divided into the study group including 136 obese patients (body mass index, BMI ≥30) and the control group with 76 normal-weight individuals (BMI >18.5 and ≤24.9). DNA was amplified by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism. The lipid profile was analyzed by enzymatic colorimetric methods. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: There was a prevalence of the GA genotype in both groups. However, comparative group analysis showed an association of the recessive model (AA+GA) with increased triglycerides (TG) and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in the study group. Conclusion: This study did not confirm an association between obesity and the LEP -2548G>A polymorphism. However, AA+GA genotypes, in the presence of obesity, seem to contribute to a reduction in HDL-C and an increase in TG compared with normal-weight individuals. This should be confirmed in further studies.

Objective: To measure the accuracy of predictive equations of resting metabolic rate (RMR) in obese teenagers in relation to indirect calorimetry (IC). Methods: This study was conducted with 116 obese teenagers (60 males; 13.7±1.1 years). The RMR was calculated from Harris and Benedict, Schofield, WHO, Henry and Rees equations. The RMR was measured by the QUARK-RMR system. The comparison between predictive equations and IC was by the Student’s t test. The reliability of data between predictive equations and IC was verified by the typical error of measu rement (TEM) and the coefficient of variation (CV%). Results: Henry’s equation was significantly different from IC (p<0.02). The CV% found for each equations compared to IC turned was low. However, when the TEM was measured it was considered high in absolute values which can cause errors when estimating the RMR. Therefore, it is important that specific predictive equations are developed for Brazilian obese teenagers.

Introduccion: El balance de energia se ve influenciado por la oxidacion de macronutrientes (proteinas, carbohidratos y lipidos). Objetivo: Caracterizar la utilizacion de sustratos en sujetos con peso normal y obesos. Metodologia: se realizo una impedancia bioelectrica y una calorimetria indirecta para determinar la oxidacion de carbohidratos y lipidos de pacientes hospitalizados. Los sujetos fueron divididos en tres grupos, el grupo 1: IMC 18,5-24,9 kg / m2, grupo 2: IMC 25-29.9 kg / m2 y el grupo 3: IMC> 30 kg / m2. Los grupos de individuos se compararon mediante la prueba de ANOVA y, en algun caso, despues de la prueba se aplico el Dunn (p< 0,05 consi-derado significativo). Resultados: Se estudiaron 38 personas (11 hombres y 27 mujeres) con una edad media de 44,3±16,5 anos; 18 normales, 10 con sobrepeso y 10 obesos. Los sujetos obesos tenian un mayor gasto energetico en reposo que los individuos normales. Obesos y no obesos oxidan cantidades similares de carbohidratos y lipidos. Conclusiones: El indice de masa corporal no se asocio con la oxidacion de los lipidos y carbohidratos en pacientes hospitalizados. La cantidad de masa sin grasa se asocia con la cantidad total de hidratos de carbono y oxidacion de lipidos.
