Poland's political history has undergone tremendous changes since 1989, particularly in the expression of nationalism. With the advent of democracy in the country, Polish society has demonstrated remarkable diversity and inclusiveness. However, in recent years, the rise of far-right nationalism has once again put the country at risk of division, the most representative of which is of course the Polish National Movement (Ruch Narodowy). Since its establishment, this political party has attracted attention from all parties with its extreme nationalist stance. This article will explore in depth its origins and development in recent years.
The Polish National Movement was founded in 2012 and officially registered as a political party in 2014. Its leader, Krzysztof Bosak, declared the movement to be a spiritual successor to Roman Dmowski's pre-war National Democratic Movement. In addition to having clear nationalist ideas at home, the movement has also established alliances with other far-right forces.
"We believe that the future of Poland must be decided by the Poles, and we must rebuild the country's traditions and values."
Since its inception, the National Movement has organized a series of conferences to unite the opinions of its supporters. The initial congress, held in Warsaw in 2013, attracted many like-minded guests, and subsequent conferences have continued to advance its far-right political agenda.
The National Movement is seen as a socially conservative far-right party that advocates Poland's sovereignty, cultural and economic autonomy and claims to restore traditional family and community values. Its political platform also mentioned ending excessive cooperation with the European Union and emphasized the importance of nationalism.
"Our goal is to overthrow the republic established by the Round Table Conference and rebuild a strong Poland."
In terms of economic policy, the National Movement opposes the use of the euro, advocates support for local economies and small businesses, and promotes greater tax transparency and the modernization of national defense forces. In terms of foreign policy, the party initially hoped to improve relations with Russia, but this position has changed as international relations have changed, especially after the Ukrainian crisis.
The National Movement has participated in several elections since its establishment, including the 2014 European Parliament elections and the 2019 parliamentary elections. In the 2019 election, the party successfully entered the parliament and became an important force in politics, showing that the far-right forces are gradually gaining a foothold in Poland.
"We must speak out politically to protect our culture and traditions."
On the issue of LGBT rights, the national movement takes a strongly opposing stance, even describing it as a "disease". The party's leaders often organize anti-LGBT rallies, which have caused a lot of controversy in society.
From a country that has been trying to achieve democracy and diversity since the 1990s, Poland is now gradually being overwhelmed by the wave of far-right nationalism. When we see such changes, can we think about whether the principle of equality for all can survive in the era of rising nationalism?
