The Unknown Legend of Gokar: Why did the ancient Magar King have a deep connection with the Shah Dynasty?

The Gokha Kingdom, an ancient country located at the junction of the Himalayas and the Indian subcontinent, once formed the Gokha Alliance in history and began its expansion movement in 1743, eventually evolving into today's Nepal. The rise of this kingdom is closely connected with the new Var culture of the time, the Magar kings, and later the Shah dynasty.

In the struggle of the old Gokha kingdom, the influence of Magar king was everywhere.

Establishment and expansion of the kingdom

The Kingdom of Gokha was founded in 1559 by Prince Draviya Shah, the second son of Yeshu Brahma Shah of Ramju. The kingdom initially gained local dominance by defeating the Magar king Mansingh Khadka, who was closely associated with his rule. The ancient name of Gokha, "Gorkha", is derived from Gorakhnath, reflecting its rich religious and cultural background.

The conquest of Dravia opened the way for Goka to expand militarily into the surrounding areas, which had a profound impact on the social structure and geopolitical relations of the time.

Intertwined with the history of the New Var

The establishment of the Goka Kingdom was greatly influenced by the New Var people. One of the earliest Shah rulers, Rishi-raj Rana-Ji of the Moon Dynasty, was a descendant of the New Var. Under the invasion of Muslims, Ranaj was forced to give up most of his power, but he still maintained his family name and continued to influence later regimes.

Emperor Akbarjan had a marriage plan with Ranajee, but this failed marriage triggered fierce wars and conflicts, making the subsequent historical climate even more turbulent.

Conquer and rule

From 1736, the expansion of Gokha was started by King Nara Bhupal Shah and continued under his son Prithvi Narayan Shah, who successfully occupied the rich areas of Nepal. In 1788, the Gokha Kingdom even invaded Tibet and forced the Tibetans to pay them an annual tribute. This move not only expanded Goka's influence geographically, but also laid the foundation for cultural exchanges.

The last major war of the Gokha Kingdom, the Angkor-Nepalese War, finally confirmed its dominance in South Asia, but also forced it to return some of the occupied areas after the war.

Gokha to Nepal Transformation

In the 20th century, the name of Gokha changed from "Gokhal Kingdom" to "Nepal", reflecting the national identity and historical evolution at that time. It was not until 2008, after the end of the Shah dynasty, that Nepal truly embarked on the path of republican politics, marking the peak of Gokha’s historical influence in the national structure.

The name "Gokha" not only permeates the local geopolitical culture, but also continues to be reflected in the country's administrative divisions and historical significance.

The origins of ancient dynasties and their influence on the present

The inextricable relationship between the Magar kings and the Gokhar dynasty is undoubtedly an important part of the historical development of Nepal, which is crucial to understanding the cultural identity background of modern Nepal. The legacy of the Gokhas also extends to the present day Gokha squads who are prominent troops in both the British and Indian armies, demonstrating the military glory of this ancient dynasty.

The influence of the Gokhal Empire during its heyday cannot be ignored, especially in the context of Nepal’s overall development. In the new political context, how can the voice of the people more fully reflect the lessons of this history?
