Why is data analysis more than just numbers? Uncover the charm of qualitative research!
In today’s data-driven world, analytics can seem to be all about numbers. However, the rise of qualitative research and thematic analysis tells us that behind the data there are human experiences and stories that cannot be ignored. This makes us wonder: How can we fully understand the hidden meaning of data?
Thematic analysis, one of the most commonly used forms of analysis in qualitative research, focuses on identifying, analyzing, and interpreting patterns of meaning or themes in qualitative data. Compared to most other qualitative analysis methods, thematic analysis is more of an all-encompassing term than a single method. This flexibility allows researchers to adjust the analysis framework and methods at any time according to their research questions and designs.
Thematic analysis goes beyond simple statistical analysis to explore both explicit and implicit meanings in the data.
Researchers employing thematic analysis can use a variety of qualitative data, such as interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, visual methods, observations, and more. Its datasets can range from a few paragraphs to hundreds of pages of interview transcripts, demonstrating its usability across data of all sizes. Importantly, thematic analysis is not just about analyzing data, but about exploring the meaning of the themes by understanding people's experiences, perspectives, and behaviors.

High-quality thematic analysis depends not only on effective samples, but also on the researcher's ability to flexibly adjust the exploration topic.
